American Idol 2012
American Idol. Never really was a fan of the show. I always thought Paula was an idiot and Simon was hilariously rude, the performers were to clean cut, generic, cookie cutter and down right boring and it just wasn't my style. In the passed few months I have been discovering alot of different music and forms of entertainment and I decided to give this show a chance. Actually, I am lying. This is what really happened. It just came on at a friends house after a football game and we were to lazy to get up and get the remote to change the channel.
UNDERDOGS
It was the auditions set in San Diego and there were some good performers, one of which was a young man named Jason "Wolf" Hamlin that works as a mechanic at a golf course that sings and plays guitars that his late father built. He performs a Creedence Clearwater Revival song by the name of "Midnight Special" and then blew me away with a split rendition of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." When I say split rendition I mean he did one verse rather tame and then played the next with more heart than the "Man in Black" could have ever dreamed. He wont be taken serious in the competition, but the dude is cool.
Since then I found a few more that I liked, one of which stuck out like a sore thumb. 26 year old Reed Grimm is a happy guy and has been in showbiz since he was 2. He definitely has his own style mixing James Brown funkiness with same scat on the theme of Family Matters. Probably the first and last time this song will every be played on AI, but he gives it a fitting performance. He is too out there to fit in, but deserves the big bucks, some way some how.
Ramiro Garcia, Houston native, worship leader at Lakewood Church. This man was born with no ears and was told he would live the rest of his life as a mute. After years and years of tests and surgeries he now has hearing and a wonderful gift. Time and faith gave him a voice to sing with and he chooses to go with "Amazing Grace" and you can really feel his version. His family waited outside for a touching reveal of that golden ticket. Not a full contestant but definitely fun to watch.
The last one that really struck a chord was Phillip Phillips. Intro was simple, his Mom wanted to meet Ryan Seacrest and comments on how attractive he is with her hubby in tow. Simple. But Phil's audition was polar opposite. He went with a soulfull Stevie Wonder classic "Superstition" and an acoustic version of MJs "Thriller." Dave Matthews comes to mind after he sings the first line and then he rises high above expectation with... well I don't know. I can't explain his style, you just need to hear and see it. Great performance. I honestly don't see the public voting for him, but then again who knows. I do see him being successful. I think he is the best Idol contestant I have seen and I think he should win. I will be on the lookout.
No they aren't cookie cutter, none of them are female and just because of the way the show usually goes, most likely none of them will win big, but they win in my book. I hope them the best. Check these following fellas out too. All of them had exceptional auditions. Jayrah Gibson, Kyle Crews, Eben Franckewitz, Heejun Han, WT Thompson, Creighton Fraker and David Leathers Jr.
